How to Reset Cartridges
- 1). Insert another cartridge into the printer and run a test page. Replace the cartridge with a third one and do the same. Insert the original refilled cartridge and it should read full, since the printer only stores the memory of two cartridges.
- 2). Place adhesive tape over one or more of the copper contacts at one end of the cartridge and insert it into the printer. Remove it and repeat this process with tape on the other end. This should erase the computer's memory of the cartridge's ink level.
- 3). Override the printer's ink level gauge. This process greatly varies, but it often involves pressing buttons like the "Cancel" and "Repeat" buttons numerous times in a certain order. Check your printer's manual.
- 4). Replace the chip if you can easily remove it. This is more likely a possibility with laser toner cartridges. A replacement chip may come with your refill kit, or you may be able to purchase one from a refill store.
- 5). Reset the chip with a reset device that is often sold separately. Press the resetter against the chip so its pins touch the chip and look for the resetter's light to flash green. Wait for the light to blink and then go off, signaling that the chip is reset.
