    • 1). Figure out the model of video card you own. You can either consult the manual that came with your card, or use the "dxdiag" program in Windows. For the latter, type "dxdiag" in the Windows search bar and press "Enter." The card model can be found under the "Display" tab under the "Device" section.

    • 2). Check the website of the company that makes the GPU of your video card for information about the newest drivers. The company that built the GPU on the card (such as Intel, ATI or NVIDIA) will have the best drivers. You can search its driver and downloads page to see if a better driver is available.

    • 3). Download the automatic installer from the GPU website. For instance, NVIDIA has a program that will examine your computer and update the drivers without you needing to do any manual work. It does, however, require a Java plugin to function properly, so if it is not already on your computer, you may be prompted to allow Java to install the plugin.

    • 4). Download the recommended drivers from the website if you have difficulty with the automatic upgrade or if you are having problems getting the installer to work. You can enter your video card model into the GPU manufacturer's webiste, which will then take you to a download page with most up-to-date drivers.

    • 5). Double-click on the downloaded file if it is an executable file. Some graphics card install drivers using their own software, which is included in the installer. (If this is the case, you won't need any other steps.)

    Manual Update

    • 1). Navigate to the "Device Manager" by selecting "Start," "Control Panel," System," then clicking "Device Manager."

    • 2). Double-click on "Display adapters" to be able to see the video card installed, then right-click on that card and select "Uninstall."

    • 3). Make sure the box is checked ("Delete the driver software") and press "OK."

    • 4). Right-click on the same video card and select "Update Driver Software." When prompted, select "Browse my computer for driver software."

    • 5). Click "Browse" and then locate the folder containing the drivers you downloaded from the GPU website.

    • 6). Click "OK" once finished, and let Windows complete the installation. You may need to restart the computer for the video properties to reset.
