How to Tell if You're Being Hacked
- 1). Perform a full scan on your system with antivirus and anti-spyware software. Enter the names of threats that turn up in these scans into a search engine, to see if they show up listed as known spyware applications. If spyware or trojan software turns up, this may indicate that your computer is currently being hacked.
- 2). Note anything unusual you observe while browsing the internet, such as redirected pages, text being entered without your command, and the cursor moving on its own. These are indicators that your computer may be currently controlled by another application or a hacker. Many hacking software applications steal information being entered on your keyboard.
- 3). Open Task Manager and navigate to the Processes tab. Press "Ctrl," "Alt," and "Del" simultaneously to open the application. Look for any applications that seem foreign to what you recognize as required for running your operating system. Look at the "Description" column of the Processes tab and verify that each process is part of either your Windows system, or part of a known third-party software developer. For example, unauthorized programs may appear in the "Image Name" and "Description" columns with jumbled letter or numbers, such as "kshj24.exe" or "rxhjs.exe." If you are unsure of the function of a process, enter its name into a search engine as you did above to determine its nature.
