How to Setup a LAN Using a Mobile PC
- 1). Check the manual that came with your mobile PC to ensure it has a built-in wireless network adapter. Purchase an external USB wireless adapter if your mobile PC doesn't have a built-in component. Attach adapter to its USB port.
- 2). Find the location in your home where you want to place the wireless router. Choose a centralized location so your mobile PC is able to connect to the network from any room. Plug in the router's AC adapter.
- 3). Measure the distance between the location of your router and your high-speed modem with a tape measure. Purchase an Ethernet cable of the appropriate length, and attach the cable to the port on your modem.
- 4). Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable in the router's "Wide Area Network" port. Depending on the model of your router, the port may be named "WAN," "Internet" or something else entirely.
- 5). Load the router's software installation disc in your mobile PC's disc drive and go through the on-screen installation prompts. Remove the disc and bring up the PC's "Start" menu.
- 6). Open the "Control Panel" and click "Network and Internet." Choose the "Network and Sharing Center" link and click "Setup a connection or network."
- 7). Choose "Next." Come up with a name you want to use for your LAN, such as "Mobile PC Home Network." Click the "Type your network name" box and enter the name.
- 8). Decide on the password you want to use to prevent unauthorized users from accessing your LAN. Enter the password in the "Security Key" field and click "Next." Choose "Finish" to create your home LAN.
- 9). Close the "Network and Sharing Center" window and right-click the Windows network icon in the notification bar at the bottom of the screen. Scroll up and click the name you chose for your LAN.

Type the security key password you selected earlier in the "Password" text box. Click "Connect" to connect your mobile PC to the new LAN.
