How to Repair an eMachines Laptop
- 1). Disconnect the power cord from the back of the eMachines laptop before attempting any repairs.
- 2). Consider replacing your eMachines laptop battery if the laptop is struggling to hold a battery charge. Average laptop batteries only last for 1000 charge cycles, so your eMachines laptop battery may need to be swapped out with a new one. Power down the machine and flip it over so you can access the base of the unit.
- 3). Find the horizontal outline of the eMachines battery, which will be near the top of the unit's bottom. Below this will be a battery release slider. Slide this mechanism to release the battery. Slide in the new eMachines laptop battery until it clicks into place.
- 4). Remove all the screws on the bottom of the eMachines laptop if there is an issue with the keyboard. Ensure the machine is powered down and the battery is popped out, then remove each screw using a Phillips screwdriver.
- 5). Turn the eMachines laptop back over to access the keyboard. Remove the eMachines keyboard shield, which is the horizontal strip directly above the keyboard and below the monitor display. With the screws on the bottom of the eMachines laptop removed, you can just slide the tip of a flathead screwdriver (or similarly thin, wedging tool) in between the slight aperture on either the left or right side of the keyboard shield. Then, jostle the flathead screwdriver upwards to pop up and remove the shield.
- 6). Pull the now loose keyboard partially out, just enough to reveal the keyboard cable. This keyboard cable runs from the keyboard to the exposed base of the eMachines laptop, where it runs into a white keyboard connector. Check to ensure the keyboard cable is not disconnected from this point. If it is, pull up gently on the connector and slide the keyboard cable back in, then set the eMachines laptop's keyboard and its shield back into place and replace the screws.
- 7). Ensure the eMachines laptop is powered down and the battery removed, then examine the bezel of the display for screws if you are having monitor issues related to display brightness and backlighting. The bezel is the perimeter that runs around the eMachines laptop's actual display. Note that depending on your eMachines model, these screws will likely be concealed with caps. Pop these off using your flathead screwdriver to wedge under them.
- 8). Remove the screws beneath the caps using your Phillips screwdriver. Pry the bezel off gently now that it's loose.
- 9). Look to the very bottom of the exposed eMachines display. There will be a green eMachines inverter board here, with a cable lying atop it and a white connector on the right-hand side of the inverter board. The cable and connector are the inverter cable and inverter connector, respectively, and govern the operation of the screen's backlight. If the cable is loose from the connector on the eMachines laptop, lift up on the connector, slide the cable back in, then press down on the connector to lock it back into place.
