Insects & Food Storage
- Any food that contains grain, sugar or dried protein is susceptible to meal moths. These commonly include cereals, rice, cornmeal, and flour along with candy, chocolate, dehydrated fruits and vegetables and nuts. Meal moths do all their damage in the larvae stage, so they are difficult to see.
- Warehouse beetles are fairly non-discriminatory in their food choices, which include everything from cereals, candy and cookies to pastas, meals, spices and potato chips. Saw-toothed and merchant grain beetles prefer any food that comes from plants, especially grains and seeds. Confused and red flour beetles like flour as well as grains, nuts, dried fruit and chocolate. Cigarette and drugstore beetles generally infest candy, cereals, pet foods and nuts.
- Keep at-risk foods in tightly sealed containers. Immediately discard any infested foods. Look in corners and under shelves and other pantry items to locate eggs and larvae. Report infested food to the store where it was purchased to prevent further pest intrusions.
