How to Prune Oak Taproot
- 1). Remove the oak tree from the pot, being careful not to damage any of the finer roots.
- 2). Comb through the roots with a root hook, a small fork or other object that allows you to separate out and untangle the roots from one another.
- 3). Uncover the taproot, which is located in the middle of the root ball.
- 4). Snip the taproot with a small pruner or sharp knife as close to the root's top as you can reach. Avoid damaging any of the surrounding roots.
- 5). Snip away any other larger roots that are developing to avoid have the tree become root bound.
- 6). Lay the tree back into the pot with the roots separated and cover with fresh potting soil.
