Use the disable button. On several laptop brands, including HP, there is usually a button at the top of the touch pad that when pushed will turn off the touch pad. This will disable the touch pad until the button is pushed again or the laptop is restarted.

    • 2). Disable from the control panel. For laptops that do not have a disable button, you must click on "Control panel," then "Mouse properties," and then choose the disable button. This method of disabling the touch pad will last even when the computer is restarted. To enable the button again, you will have to return to this location and choose the "Enable" option. This will be the better option if you are consistently using an external mouse for navigation.

    • 3). Use a keystroke program. Download and install a program such as TouchFreeze. This program will automatically disable the touch pad when you begin typing and will automatically enable the button within a few seconds after you finish typing. If you choose to install this program, you can set it to automatically run when the computer is started.
