How to Identify the Internal Components of a Laptop
- 1). Find a local laptop repair facility that is certified to work on your laptop's make and model.
- 2). Take your laptop to the repair facility and explain that you want to identify the internal components.
- 3). Retrieve your laptop and the component identification information after the repair facility calls you to come pick it up.
- 1). Study the manufacturer's laptop service and repair instructions and orient yourself to the step-by-step instructions for laptop disassembly and assembly they provide.
- 2). Put on an anti-static wrist band and attach its clip to a metal surface to discharge static electricity, and then carefully remove the laptop casing and screen according to the manufacturer's service and repair instructions.
- 3). Use a magnifying glass to examine the components and enter their part numbers and manufacturer names or marks in a notebook.
- 4). Follow the laptop service and repair instructions to reassemble the laptop.
- 5). Remove the wrist band and store it with your computer tool kit for future use.
- 1). Download a system identification utility that is designed to run on your laptop's operating system and install it on your laptop (for example, System Information Works, Lavalys Everest or PC Wizard 2009). The utilities each have slight differences in how you interact with them and each may be specific to a single operating system, but the information they provide is generally the same.
- 2). Run the installed utility, then set it to create a full report and print the report. If you do not have a printer attached to your laptop, you can also open the report to view it on your screen.
- 3). Review the report results to confirm that they match the manufacturer's specification sheets or your own expectations about what should be inside your laptop.
