Intel created the Centrino line of processors specifically with laptops in mind. Connectivity, battery life and portability were key factors of their creation to bring the best experience to laptop users. All major notebook manufacturers provide Centrino 2 computers. In 2008 Intel continued the series with its introduction of the Centrino 2 processors. - One of the most significant jumps in technology is the 1,066 mhz front bus, which allows effective use of up to eight gigabytes of DDR3 memory. All Centrino 2 systems support the new 802.11n wireless standard and have greater range capabilities than previous generations. The processors support as much as two gigabtyes of Turbo Memory (flash memory) for speeding up common processes.
- The Centrino 2 could also optimize graphics performance for higher performance or a lower power draw. To battery life, Intel's Deep Power Down technology shuts down parts of the processor such as core clocks and cache levels when the computer is in an idle, or sleep, state.
- Centrino 2 is the fifth generation of Centrino processors. The line started in 2003.
Manufacturers tout Centrino as a great choice for laptop buyers because of related connectivity options. However, because the the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee had not yet ratified 802.11g networks, the first Centrino processors in 2003 did not support the newer wireless technology, even though they were in common use.
Intel pushed solid-state drives (SSDs) in notebooks with the Centrino 2.
