How to Graft a Yucca Tree

    • 1). Take a scion from any thriving yucca tree. To cut the scion, or the branch that will be grafted onto the yucca rootstock, cut a 4- to 6-inch length off the tip of a healthy, thriving branch. Make sure that the length of the cut yucca branch has a minimum of three buds.

    • 2). Create a slot for the yucca scion on a fully mature yucca rootstock. Use a freshly-cleaned, sharp knife to make a slice 2 inches into the rootstock through the bark. Make the cut at a 45-degree angle, so that the slot for the scion is in an upward "V" shape.

    • 3). Shave off some of the wood from the base of the scion to create a tab on the base that is about the size of the slice you cut in the rootstock. Insert the tab that you created at the base into the cut on the rootstock so that it fits securely. If the scion slips at all, secure it into the rootstock with two small nails.

    • 4). Spread grafting wax over the area where the scion and rootstock meet. Make sure the wax thoroughly covers any area that is exposed, or doesn't have bark.
