How to Set Up a New Garage
- 1). Make a list of the uses for the garage. Your list might include car storage, a workshop area, storage for household items, sporting equipment and lawn equipment. Estimate how much space you need for each of these functions.
- 2). Sketch the garage including any permanent fixtures such as doors or windows. Draw in areas for each of the purposes on the list you created.
- 3). Go to the garage to measure out the different areas, using the sketch as a guide. Make sure the layout you created on the drawing works in the actual garage.
- 4). Install any overhead storage systems before you fill the garage. Having an open space to work with makes the job easier. Use this storage to hold items that aren't used frequently.
- 5). Set up a workbench and tool storage area. Most homes need at least a few tools, so you will want some sort of storage area for them. The size of the workbench and tool storage is up to your personal preference and how often you use these items. A standing tool chest or a pegboard on the wall work well for holding various tools.
- 6). Add any wall shelving or hooks to the garage. Set up specialty storage units for items such as sporting goods or yard tools.
- 7). Move in all of the items that belong in the garage. Place them in the designated areas using the storage systems to keep them organized.
- 8). Pull any vehicles into the garage that are stored there regularly. Walk around the garage to ensure there is enough clearance to access the other areas with the vehicle inside.
