    Privacy Screen

    • Providing privacy yet filtering the light that passes through it, the Shoji screen is commonly used as a privacy screen. After you designate a dressing and changing area, use a Shoji screen to block the view. Add a bench behind the screen to sit down as you change out your work or nighttime clothes. You can even temporarily drape your garments over the screen as you get changed.

    Bedroom

    • The wood-and-paper construction of the Shoji screen aesthetically invokes feelings of calm and relaxation. For this reason, they work well to delineate the bedroom space. Use a Shoji screen as a privacy barrier between your bedroom or bathroom door and the bed, or use it to demarcate your bedroom space from the rest of your living space in an open-floor design.

    Room Dividers

    • Shoji screens are well-suited accents for a study or rest-and-relaxation areas of a home. Use a Shoji screen to section off a private area in your living space from the more active areas, and designate it as your own personal study or getaway. Decorate the area, toss in a few large floor pillows, and enjoy this at-home retreat every chance you get.

    Decorative Backdrop

    • This is where the Shoji screen shows off. Use the Shoji screen as a piece of art. Place it behind an elaborate plant arrangement that combines large floor plants, small trees, plant stand arrangements and hanging plants.

Flank both sides of a seating arrangement with two Shoji screens--right behind the end tables. Not only does this arrangement add balance to the room, it also draws the eyes upward because of their scale and height. Use a Shoji screen behind a sofa positioned away from a wall to add interest to the sofa as the room's focal point, or simply to create a barrier between the back of the couch and the rest of the room.

A Shoji screen headboard or one used behind a bed's headboard is a very calming backdrop accent for the bed. Candle accents on the nightstands, live plants, soft and plush pillows, and calming wall colors can complete the Shoji screen effect.
