How to Use Hayward Filters

    • 1). Connect the pump/motor assembly to the Hayward filter housing. The filter does the cleaning but the pump brings the water into the filter. You must connect the pump/motor assembly to allow it to push the water through the system. Use plumbers tape at the connection point for leak prevention.

    • 2). Secure the return hose to the return spout on the pool filter. Make sure the connections are tight. If you have a screw-on type connection, apply plumbers tape at the connection point to prevent leaking. If your hoses are connected via a metal clamp, dip the open end of the hose in hot water before connecting it to the spout. It makes the hose more pliable and easier to push onto the spout. Once the hose is on the spout, tighten the clamp.

    • 3). Hook the skimmer hose to the pump basket connection. Once you do this some water may flow into the pump. You want the water to run into the pump because Hayward filters are self priming. You must make sure the pump basket is filled with water prior to turning on the pump.

    • 4). Open the air valve. Pool filters require a vacuum environment to work properly. Any air that is trapped in the pool filter must be released for optimal pool filtration. Opening the air valve gives the air trapped in the filter housing a place to escape.

    • 5). Plug the motor into the electric source and turn it on. Watch and wait for water to spray from the open air valve. As soon as water starts to spray, close the air valve.

    • 6). Add diatomaceous earth through the skimmer if you have a Hayward DE filter. Make sure to read the owner’s manual to ensure you are adding the right amount of DE.
