How to Get Music Off of a PS3 to Computer
- 1). Plug one end of the PS3 audio cable into the PS3's audio output jack. Plug the RCA jacks on the end of that cable into the audio cable with RCA jacks on one end and a 3.5 mm (i.e., headphone) jack on the other end. Plug the 3.5 mm jack into your computer's "Line In" jack. This jack is usually located near the Headphone or Audio Out jack on your computer. It may be blue and labeled "In," or it may be pink with a picture of a microphone.
- 2). Start your audio recording software application on your computer. Click the Windows "Start" button, click the "All Programs" button, then click the name of the application.
Many computers do not have audio recording software preinstalled. If you do not know whether your computer has such an application, you can download and install a free audio recording application, such as Audacity (see Resources). - 3). Test the connection between the PS3 and your computer. Turn on your computer's speakers. Play some music on the PS3. You should hear music from the PS3 through your computer's speakers.
If you do not hear music, check your computer's Line In settings. Double-click the speaker icon at the lower right of the Windows desktop. This opens a Master Volume window. For the Line In settings in that window, uncheck the "Mute" checkbox if it is checked, and adjust the volume slider to at least 50 percent. If you are using the Microphone or Aux In inputs, adjust settings for those inputs also. Now you should hear the music. - 4). Adjust the settings in your audio recording application. In Audacity, click the "Preferences" item in the "Edit" menu and ensure "Channels" is set to "two." Also in the Preferences window, click "File Formats" and configure Audacity to use the LAME MP3 encoder; if this encoder is not available, you can download it from the Audacity website.
Click "Find Library," browse to the folder on your computer that contains the file "lame_enc.dll," then select the file and click the "OK" button. Also adjust the recording bit rate if you need to. A low bit rate of 128 Kbps is fine for speech, but a higher bit rate such as 256 Kbps is better for music. - 5). Click the "Record" button in your audio recording application, then play the music on the PS3 that you want to transfer to your computer. Click the "Stop" button in the audio recording application when you have recorded the music you want to transfer, and stop the music on the PS3.
If you are recording several songs, you can record all of them to one file, then split the file into individual songs in the audio recording application. Click the "File" menu and "Save As" to name and save a file of the recorded music. - 1). Insert a USB flash drive into a USB port on the PS3.
- 2). Use the PS3's game controller to browse to a music file in the PS3 Cross Media Bar. Select the music file you want to copy. Press the triangle button, then select "Copy" from the file's options menu. Follow the directions on the screen to copy the file to the USB flash drive.
- 3). Remove the USB flash drive from the PS3. Insert it into a USB port on your computer. Open the USB flash drive as a folder.
- 4). Select music files in the USB flash drive folder and copy them to a folder on your computer.
