    • 1). Click on the "Windows Start Menu" button located in the lower left of the screen. You can see an example of this button, which is also the "Vista logo" in the Resources section of this article.

    • 2). Click on "Control Panel" and look for "Appearances and Personalization." Choose "Desktop Background" from the list of options that appears.

    • 3). Browse through the color schemes and images under the "Vista" heading and click on the one you want to change the desktop background to. If you want to use your own image as the desktop background click on "Browse" and double click on the image you want to use.

    • 4). Click on the "drop down" menu box below "How should the picture be positioned" and choose one of the following options: "fit the screen," "tiled," or "centered." "Fit the screen" will stretch the image, "tiled" will create a side by side pattern of the same image, and "centered" will place the image directly in the middle of the screen.

    • 5). Under "Change Background Color" click on the "default color box" and select a color from the choices. If your image has black edges for example you might choose black to give a smoother appearance. You might also choose a bright color to contrast the edges of the image and make it stand out. Click "OK" to change the background and click on "Apply" if prompted.
