How to Use a PPG DZ3 Primer
- 1). Wash the surface to be treated with warm, soapy water. Put on your eye protection, face mask and rubber gloves. Verify that any putty or filler that has been applied to the surface has cured completely according to the time and method specified by the manufacturer for full curing.
- 2). Fill a hand spray bottle with PPG DX330 Acryli-Clean Wax and Grease Remover (metal surfaces only -- never use DX330 on fiberglass), DX393 0.6 Low VOC Cleaner or DX394 1.4 Low VOC Cleaner. Spray the surface generously with the cleaner and wipe the surface in one direction with a clean, dry cloth before the cleaner has a chance to dry.
- 3). Sand bare metal thoroughly by hand or with a power sander using 80 to 180 grit sandpaper or abrasive block or disks. Use 320 to 400 grit dry abrasive or wet 600 grit abrasive to sand old finishes by hand or with a power sander.
- 4). Clean once again with any of the three PPG cleaners according to Step 2. Wipe the surface with a clean, dry cloth very thoroughly to ensure that no trace of cleaner remains.
- 5). Prepare raw steel or unpainted galvanized steel according to the method in Step 6. Alternately, apply self-etching primer to raw or galvanized steel or to raw aluminum according to the instructions in Steps 7 and 8. Skip to Step 9 if you are applying Kondar DZ3 over existing finish or primer or to raw fiberglass.
- 6). Mix one part DX579 with two parts of water to condition raw or galvanized steel. Apply the mixture to the surface with a clean cloth or with an abrasive pad for galvanized steel. Allow the cleaner to react with the metal for 2 to 3 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with water. Then, apply undiluted DX520 conditioner to raw steel with a clean cloth or to galvanized steel with an abrasive pad. Allow it to react with the metal for 1 to 2 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water. Skip to step 9.
- 7). Remove your sprayer jar from your sprayer head. Add one part of DX1791 transparent primer and one part of DX1792 catalyst, or one part of either DX170 pigmented primer with chrome or its chrome-free DX171 version and one part of DX172 catalyst in the jar. Stir the primer and catalyst together with a mixing stick until they are fully mixed. Screw the jar back onto the spray head and affix a 1.3 or 1.5 mm nozzle to the head.
- 8). Set your spray gun air pressure to 10 PSI (pounds per square inch) at the air cap if you are using an HVLP spray gun or set a conventional gun to 40-50 PSI at the gun for DX1791. The settings for DX170 or 171 are 5 to 10 PSI at the air cap for HVLP guns or 35 to 40 PSI at the gun for conventional guns. Turn on your spray gun or compressor. Spray the entire surface evenly and apply one medium coat of the primer. Allow to dry for 10 to 20 minutes. Clean your spray head, tip and jar.
- 9). Make sure that your spray gun jar and nozzle are clean and that no residue of any other primer or paint remain in any part of the spray gun. Shake the container of DZ3 well.

Remove the spray gun jar from the spray head and add five parts of DZ3 and six parts of either PPG DTV801 or DTV802 thinner to the jar. DTV801 is recommended for use in cooler temperatures. Mix the thinner and primer well with a mixing stick. Screw the jar back onto the spray head and attach a 1.6 or 1.8 mm tip to the spray head. - 11
Set your spray gun pressure to 10 PSI at the cap if you are using an HVLP gun or 30 to 35 PSI at the head for a regular spray gun. Start your spray gun or air compressor motor and evenly spray the surface with the first coat of primer. Allow 10 minutes for the first coat to dry and apply an optional second coat if desired. Apply an optional and final third coat 10 minutes after the second coat. - 12
Allow the surface to dry for a half hour before sanding again, according to the directions specified on the top coat that you are applying to the primer. - 13
Clean your spray gun with a solvent cleaner such as mineral spirits or a cleaner recommended by the spray gun manufacturer. - 14
Dispose of any used packages of PPG cleaners or primers and any waste such as saturated cloths according to your local environmental regulations for hazardous waste. Contact your local sanitation department for disposal instructions if you are not familiar with the pertinent rules.
