How to Wire Wrap an Oval Stone
- 1). Pick out wire for your project at a jewelry supply store or craft store. Pick out two kinds of wire between 22 and 24 gauge in thickness. Look for wires that contrast but complement each other. For example, use one silver wire and one gold wire, or a smooth wire and a textured wire. Choose a thinner wire between 28 and 30 gauge to use as a connector for your thicker wires. Purchase one foot of each type.
- 2). Create a loop in the center of the two thick wires by wrapping them around the round nosed pliers. Grip the loop with the chain nosed pliers and twist the wires together to create the top of the pendant. Make rounded triangular bends in the thick wires to the left of the top loop to hold the oval stone in the wire setting.
- 3). Cut a 2 centimeter length of thin wire with your metal clippers. Join the thicker wires by wrapping neat coils of thin wire beneath the triangular bends. Clip any excess wire from the coil towards the back of the setting. Separate the two thick wires under the coil connection and create another triangular bend in each. One wire should be bent towards the front of the stone and another towards the back of the stone.
- 4). Repeat the process of connecting the thick wires together with a coil of thin wire at the end of each bent section. Continue to create triangular bends followed by coiled wire connections from the top to the bottom of your oval stone. Alternate between bending the two thick wires together towards the front of the stone and creating separated wires bent towards both the front and back of the stone. Repeat this technique with the two wires on the right side of the pendant's top loop.
- 5). Finish the wire wrapped setting at the bottom of the oval stone. Overlap the four thick wires at the bottom of the setting by at least 1 centimeter. Clip off excess wire evenly. Wrap the overlapping wires tightly with a coil of the thin wire to secure the setting. Pinch the bent sections against the oval stone until it is secure in the setting.
