Emotions of Graduation

When one thinks of graduations, we usually think of happy times, of accomplishments, of goal achievements.
However, for many people graduation is a time of many emotions.
For the graduate, it can be a time of mixed emotions, feeling both happy and sad.
The graduate experiences happiness and a sense of accomplishment of achieving their educational goals, and a sense of excitement with taking the next step in their life journey; the excitement of what tomorrow holds now that their goal is completed.
You wouldn't think graduation would be a time of sadness, however, the emotion of sadness comes from an ending.
For many graduates, they realize good friends will be lost due to moving back home or to a different city to start their careers.
And for some graduates, there is the emotion of fear.
They are comfortable with their educational setting, they know what is expected of them, and now they face the challenge of succeeding in a career which can result in that fear feeling.
So, what can you do to help those graduates who are experiencing those negative emotions? As always in life, sometimes a quick reminder in the form of an inspirational quote or a saying can help change those negative feelings into positive ones.
You can write an inspirational quote in a congratulation card, or you can do something as simple as picking a rock and writing a saying with a permanent marker, or you can make a card they can place on their desk or in their wallet with the saying on it.
A couple of positive sayings that could be used with someone who is feeling a bit negative could be: "What I do today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it.
" "Persistence prevails when all else fails.
" And one of our favourite quotes for a new graduate was said by Ralph Waldo Emerson, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.
" The most important aspects of graduation is the support and the encouragement from family and friends.
Yes, the graduate has achieved a major milestone in their life and should be recognized, but the next step of the graduate's life also needs encouragement.
So, while celebrating this exciting time, also find time to talk with the graduate about their feelings and their emotions.
Let them know it is okay to have mixed emotions during this exciting time of their life.
And depending on how they are feeling, find that perfect quote to serve as a reminder that they can do it and as a reminder that you are there to offer any encouragement they need in this journey of life!
