How to Add a New Steel Beam Below an Existing Steel Beam
- 1). Inspect the beam that is already installed. Check if it is sagging slightly or if it is loose in any location. Tighten down all the bolts that are holding it in place with an impact driver to strengthen the original beam before the new one is installed underneath it.
- 2). Measure the length of the existing beam from one end to the other and record the measurement. This will determine how long the new steel beam will need to be. Using a steel beam that is the exact same size, inspect it to verify it is in good condition.
- 3). Walk the beam up a ladder to the desired location, if necessary. Have a helper hold one end while you hold the other. Match up the proper size bolts with the ones that are installed on the other beams. This will vary depending on the size of beams you are using.
- 4). Line up the new beam horizontally underneath the original beam. Attach a metal drill bit to an impact driver and drill holes through the new beam and into the existing vertical beam. Drill holes in the same location as they were drilled in the first beam. Press the first bolt firmly into place through a drilled hole. Screw it through the beam and into the vertical beam behind it with an impact driver. Screw the remaining bolts into place in the same manner.
- 5). Move to the other side and install the beam to the vertical beam next to it in the exact same manner. Inspect the beam and make sure it is secure on both sides to the vertical beam.
