How to Build Outside Storage Sheds
- 1). Level the ground where your shed will be built. Lay cinder bocks spaced four feet apart in the cleared area to serve as the shed's foundation. The cinder blocks should all be level with each other and shouldn't sink when weight is applied to them.
- 2). Build a floor out of two-by-fours. Space the joists so they will rest on the cinder block foundation. Lay the floor on the foundation.
- 3). Build the walls of the shed out of two-by-fours. On the front wall, frame a six-foot wide by seven-foot tall doorway. Cover all the wall frames with plywood.
- 4). Build two three-foot by seven-foot doors out of two-by-twos and plywood. If you have a table saw, two-by-twos can be easily made by ripping a piece of two-by-four lengthwise. Attach the hinges to the doors so that the doors swing outward. Mount the locking assembly for the padlock in the middle where the doors meet.
- 5). Raise a two-by-four ridge pole about two or three feet above the top of the side walls, depending on the size of your shed. Attach the rafter brackets at even intervals across the ridge pole and put two-by-four rafters in place. Once all the rafters are securely attached to the ridge pole, lay plywood on the top of the rafters and screw or nail it in place.
- 6). Tar paper and shingle the roof to protect the shed's contents from moisture.
- 7). Paint the shed with exterior paint to protect the wood from weathering.
