Concrete Molds for Bird Baths & Fountains
- Sand is the best medium for creating a simple bird bath or fountain. Mound a bag of playground sand on the ground and use it to create a mold for the concrete. To do this, press a large bowl or other vessel into the sand, and then remove it to create a mold. Pour concrete into the mold you made. Press the original bowl into the concrete to help it create a relief shape. Coating the outside of the bowl or vessel with quick release or vegetable oil helps easily remove the bowl once the concrete sets.
- Instead of making your own mold, use a store-bought mold to create your bird bath or fountain. Molds, found at home improvement stores, allow you to make intricate patterns and designs in your garden ornaments and require little effort on your part. Pour the concrete directly into the mold and allow it to set. To add a personal touch to the finished product, use concrete colorant. Place the finished bird bath or fountain directly on the ground or on a store-bought pedestal.
- Another option for creating your own molds for bird baths and fountains is using leaves. Mound up the sand on your workspace. Then, place a large leaf, such as a banana, rhubarb or Hosta leaf, on top of the mound of sand. Place the leaf face down to add the detailing of the veins of the leaf. Place the concrete on top of the leaf. Once the concrete is dry, turn it over and remove the leaf.
- With any concrete molding, additional detail can be added using stones, ceramic pieces or even paint. Look for stones around your garden or your local craft store and place the pieces in the mold or on top of the leaf before pouring the concrete. Alternatively, break up old tea cups or other pieces of china and use the chips as ceramic tiles. A third option is to paint the concrete structure once it is dry. Use outdoor paints for best results.
