The Border Early in the Season.
This little front walk garden bed needs some help. The busy road traffic makes working in this front yard unpleasant, so this bed was created for minimal maintenance. The bed is about 6' at it's widest (where it meets the driveway) and curves down to about 3' wide. Length is 22'.
The color scheme is burgundy and white. There are two burgundy containers planted with 'Blackie' and 'Margarita' sweet potato vine and white Wave petunias.
The large container is at the start of the walkway and a smaller version sits on the front steps.
Sweet alyssum fills in and carpets the bed. It's a living mulch, but it gets tired by mid-August and has to be trimmed back.
The other plants, in the order that you pass them going down the walk, are:
This photo is early in the season, so the plants haven't begun to fill in. By mid-July, it looks pretty good. But here's what I'd like to correct:
There's more detail on each of the plants in the following photos. Once you've looked around, any suggestions? Is it just too narrow? Too little color variety? Any plants you could suggest?

The other plants, in the order that you pass them going down the walk, are:
- 3 Purple Fountain Grasses (Pennisetum 'Rubrum')
- 1 Weigela 'Wine and Roses'
- 3 White Wand Flowers (Gaura lindheimeri)
- 3 Purple Leaf Coral Bells (Heuchera 'Dolce Licorice')
- 3 Sedum 'Black Jack'

- The Sweet Alyssum comes and goes. I'd like a low growing white plant that stays nice looking, but won't take over the space.
- The Gaura flops and smothers everything near it. I'm looking for something airy, that doesn't flop.
- It's kind of boring. The large ceramic pot (3' tall), makes a decent focal point with the Weigela behind it, but the bed as a whole lacks punch.
