How to Care for an Aztec Plant
- 1). Water the Aztec plant generously after planting and at least once a week during the first growing season. Maintain moist soil to a depth of 1 inch. Aztec plants will require watering only during droughts, once established.
- 2). Feed the Aztec plant an all-purpose fertilizer. Follow the packaging instructions for allocation amounts and frequency. Most Aztec plants appreciate a dose of fertilizer each spring.
- 3). Allow the foliage of the Aztec plant to die back on its own during the fall. The foliage will turn from green to yellow and finally brown. Once the foliage turns brown, mow it down to the soil level with a lawnmower or sharp pair of scissors. The Aztec plant will re-emerge after the winter.
- 4). Remove pests with your gloved hands. Aztec plants are prone to infestation by scales, slugs, snails and mites. Pick the pests off one by one if they appear singly or in small groups. For larger infestations, spray the plants with a garden hose until the pests fall from the plants.
- 5). Prune the Aztec plant using a pair of sharp scissors to control the spread. If rhizomes come up through the soil in undesirable areas, use a small spade to dig up and remove the rhizome. Removing the rhizomes will not harm the parent plant.
