How to Get Pet Urine Smell Out

    • 1). Blot or soak up as much liquid from the material as possible with paper towels, a sponge or a rag. In an article featured in "Good Housekeeping" magazine, Heloise suggests standing on towels to soak up more. Skip this step if the stain is old or dried.

    • 2). Apply enzyme cleaner directly to the stain. Spray or squirt laundry pretreaters on the stain, and work in laundry detergent using a sponge or rag. If the stain is outside, use a brush to scrub cleaner into the stain. Allow the cleaner to sit on the stain at least five minutes to make sure the urine proteins are broken down.

    • 3). Rinse the article. With smaller items like clothing, this can easily be accomplished at a sink using lukewarm water. If it is on carpeting or upholstery, fill a bucket with lukewarm water. Using a damp sponge, gently blot the stain and soak up the cleaner. Rinse the sponge and repeat. Continue soaking up cleaner and rinsing the sponge until all traces of cleaner are gone.

If the stain is outside on brick or concrete, simply rinse with a garden hose.

    • 4). Allow the item to air dry. Do not apply heat of any kind such as a blowdryer or clothes dryer. If any pet urine remains, drying the article with heat can make the stain impossible to remove.

    • 5). Check for residual odor. If any remains, repeat the steps.
