How to Measure Eyelet Curtains

    • 1). Hang the curtain rod over the window. Typically a rod is hung about 4 inches above the top of the window and extends about 6 inches beyond the window edge on either side. In other words, the rod measurement would be about 12 inches longer than the actual window measurement.

    • 2). Measure the width of the curtain rod after it is hung. Write this number down. Each window panel used in the window should equal the width of the curtain rod. To achieve a full effect, you need as much fabric as double the width of the curtain rod.

    • 3). Measure the distance from the top of the curtain rod to the place where you want the curtains to hang. Since eyelet curtains are generally considered informal curtains, you may wish to use a shorter length for the curtains. Measure ¼ inch above the floor for floor-length curtains, 6 inches below the window sill for mid-length curtains or ¼ inch above the window sill for window-length curtains.

    • 4). Add 1 extra inch to the length measurement that you wrote on the piece of paper. This is the typical distance from the top of the curtain to the top of the eyelet hole. If you do not add this extra measurement to the length, then the curtains may be too short.

    • 5). Take the measurements to a custom curtain shop. Alternatively, compare the measurements against the most common ready-made curtain lengths. These lengths are 94 inches, 84 inches and 64 inches. Valence curtains are 6 to 18 inches long.
