What is House Sitting? House sitting is when you go to someone's house and live there until they come back from a trip whether it's for business, vacation, visiting family, etc.
You don't have to worry about doing anything full time.
You live there like you live in your own home meaning you can still go to work or school during the day.
Usually you will have some duties other than just living there.
You will have to keep the place clean and tidy, take care of pets if they have any, bring in the mail, water plants, and complete any other upkeep duties or chores.
It's fairly simple work.
How do I Start? The hardest part of house sitting is getting house sitting jobs.
You need to not only find people who go away on business or for vacations, you also need to find people who will trust you to stay alone in their home with their possessions.
Trust is a very important factor.
You're better off working with people you know, at least to start until you get enough references and build a strong rapport with your clients.
Over time, your clientele base will not only be work, it will bring you more work.
Customers you have that are happy with your work will start to tell your friends and family about your business.
Word of mouth is great for both parties.
You get more work without having to actively market for it and they get someone they can trust because the person who referred them to you trusted you.
To be prepared, it's a good idea to get insurance.
There is a type of business insurance you can get to protect you and your customers.
This will protect both of you and give your customers another reason to be more confident in what you have to offer.
When you get started, be prepared to have a sparing amount of work.
Chances are you won't be booked from the start, so don't quit your day job.
Just work toward building up your clients.
Eventually, most of your business will be made up of repeat business.
You will also find that you probably have the most business during the summer when people take vacations.
Try to get jobs that require you to stay overnight and other jobs that don't at the same time like pet sitting jobs or just checking up on the house each day.
