Directions to Build an Arbor
- 1). Decide where to build your new arbor. Measure and stake out where the posts will be positioned. Dig four post holes 24 inches deep and 1 foot in diameter using a post hole digger.
- 2). Mix the cement according to the instructions on the bag. Set each 4-by-4 treated post into the cement. Check for plum in all directions and brace each post with scrap wood while curing. Allow the posts to set for two days.
- 3). Measure and cut two beams using the 2-by-6 treated wood to the desired length and measure to length all top cross pieces using a circular saw before assembling. Decide on the spacing of the top cross pieces, place marks on top of the beams, and pre-drill holes for the nails. Add interest to your arbor by making a design cut at the end of the beams and the cross pieces using a jigsaw.
- 4). Start to assemble the arbor by first tacking one end of the 2-by-6 beam to one post, level it with a carpenter's level and temporarily tack it to the other end. Drill two holes through the beam and post at each end large enough for 3/8-inch lag bolts. Attach the beams securely with the lag bolts. Repeat this step with the other two posts.
- 5). Align the top cross pieces with the pre-drilled holes on the beams and attach each one using hammer and nails. Add lattice to the top of the arbor if more shade is needed. Add lattice to the sides of the arbor for climbing plants if desired.
