    • This medication works by eliminating unneeded water and sodium from the body through urination. Take triamterene early in the day to avoid getting up at night to urinate.

    Side Effects

    • Common side effects of triamterene include vomiting, dizziness, headache and this medication may turn your urine blue. Contact your physician if these side effects become bothersome.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Some serious side effects of triamterene include muscle weakness or cramps, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, upset stomach, extreme tiredness, unusual bleeding or bruising, severe dry mouth, sore throat and yellowing of the skin or eyes. Contact your physician immediately if you experience these side effects.

    Warning

    • Avoid salt substitutes containing potassium or eating an excessive amount of potassium-rich foods such as citrus fruits, bananas, tomatoes, apricots and dates.

    Considerations

    • Triamterene can cause sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid unnecessary or extended sun exposure while taking this medication. Wear sunglasses, sunscreen or protective clothing while out in the sun.
