    Dosing Instructions for Adults

    • Scientific research, expert opinion, publications and traditional use have all determined that a dose of 0.5 to 50 milligrams of melatonin is adequate for promoting sleep, according to the Mayo Clinic. For the treatment of sleep disorders, quick-release formulations of melatonin are also generally more effective than sustained-release formulas.

Adults 18 years of age and older can take 0.5 milligrams an hour before bedtime to promote sleep, or to cure a case of jet lag. Blind people should take 5 to 10 milligrams of melatonin nightly to promote circadian rhythm entraining. Elderly individuals can take 3 to 5 milligrams of melatonin up to two hours before bedtime to combat insomnia.

    Dosing Instructions for Children

    • Many physicians recommend melatonin for children with neuro-psychiatric disorders such as autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and mental retardation. The exact dose for children often depends on an individual child's age, weight and severity of sleep disturbances. Start with a minimum dose of 0.5 milligrams per night, and increase the dose by 0.5 milligrams if there seems to be no effect. Administer up to 10 milligrams of melatonin to induce sleep and promote restful sleep.

    Precautions

    • Melatonin is not approved or regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and there are no manufacturing standards to govern the production of melatonin products. Speak to your physician before using melatonin or any other type of sleep aid.
Synthetic melatonin is available in several forms, and different brands may have differing dosage amounts. Read all directions provided by the manufacturer.
