How to Remove the Starter From a 1996 Mazda 626

    • 1). Remove the negative battery terminal connection with an open-end wrench then remove the positive battery terminal. Unbolt the fresh air duct and resonance chamber from the driver's side of the engine bay with a 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Unbolt the intake manifold bracket on the starter motor with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

    • 2). Lift the front end of the Mazda 626 with a jack and place a jack stand on both sides of the chassis. Remove the connections on the alternator with an open-end wrench.

    • 3). Unbolt the starter motor with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Crawl underneath the car and take the starter off of the engine, lowering it down from the motor next to the exhaust system.
