How to Build an Erupting Clay Volcano Model
- 1). Stand the 2-liter bottle where you would like to construct the model. Measure a 2-foot by 3-foot section of chicken wire with the measuring tape. Use the scissors to cut the section.
- 2). Cut the section of chicken wire into a trapezoid shape by standing the wire on its side and cutting off both of the top corners. Use the measuring tape to measure 2 inches from each side of the center and leave 4 inches on the top edge of the chicken wire. When you connect the chicken wire from end to end, it will create a cone shape that has a hole in the top.
- 3). Roll the cut chicken wire into a cone shape and twist the ends together with your fingers to connect the two sides together. Place the volcano frame over the 2-liter bottle and try to match the hole in the chicken-wire frame with the hole in the top of the bottle.
- 4). Flatten the molding clay into sheets and place the flat sheets of clay on the volcano frame until it is covered with clay. This is your volcano model. Fold the clay under the lip of the hole in the top to mask the wire underneath.
- 5). Place a funnel into the hole at the top of the model. Measure 2 cups of water in the measuring cup and pour it into the hole. Remove the funnel and pour 4 or 5 drops of red food coloring into the hole. Replace the funnel in the hole, measure 1/4 cup of baking and pour it into the 2-liter bottle.
- 6). Measure 1/4 cup of vinegar with the measuring cup, and when you are ready for the volcano to erupt, pour the vinegar into the mixture inside the bottle that is underneath the volcano model. The mixture will rise and explode out of the top of the bottle, sending it spewing out of the volcano model.
