    Beginning a Lawn Treatment Program

    • All types of turf grass benefit from a regular fertilizing program. The timing of each application is quite important to the overall health of the turf grass and to the effectiveness of each fertilizer application. Begin most fertilizing programs in the spring at about the time the grass comes out of winter dormancy and begins to turn green and grow on its own. Depending on your location, you may begin as early as February and as late as April. The first type of Scotts fertilizer to apply at this time is called Scotts Turf Builder With Halts Crabgrass Preventer. Crabgrass is generally an annual weed that dies off at the end of each growing season and comes back each spring when the seeds from the previous year germinate and begin to grow. The fertilizer portion of this product greens the grass and prevents and crab grass seeds from the previous year from germinating so there will be no crab grass issues during the current year. The only significant limitation to this product is that you cannot re-seed your lawn and use a Halts product at the same time. Halts will prevent the grass seed from germinating as well.

    Applying Scotts Weed and Feed

    • Scotts Weed and Feed is your second line of defense against a long list of weeds that can and will infiltrate your lawn if they are left untreated. Apply the first application of Weed and Feed in the late spring to early summer when weeds are growing actively. The lawn should be damp so the fertilizer and herbicide additive will stick to the weeds after application with either a drop or broadcast spreader. A second application may be required if some weeds remain six to eight weeks after the first application, which is not uncommon---especially when the weed problem is severe. Make no more than two applications in one year. Weed and Feed applications do not need to be made back to back. You can use two other fertilizer products in between Weed and Feed applications: SummerGuard to fertilize and to kill bugs or Lawn Fertilizer with 2 percent Iron. If you are having a lawn bug problem, SummerGuard is an ideal product. Otherwise the Lawn fertilizer will work well too. If weeds begin to pop up again, use Weed and Feed to take care of the problem.
