How to Paint a Pretty Picture

    • 1). Decide what you want to paint. Would you prefer a landscape? A portrait? Deciding what you want to paint is very important. A common misconception is that modern art is created by beginning before the artist has perceived a vision for their piece. This is very unusual, and you will be far more successful if you begin your painting with an end goal in mind.

    • 2). Gather your supplies. A trip to the local art store will inevitably be required. If you are not sure what type of paint you would like to use (you can choose among oil-based, acrylic, watercolor and pastel), ask the clerk at the store for assistance. If you are creating your first painting, avoid buying an easel and other professional gear until you know this is a hobby you plan to stick with. Basic essentials include: paint, a quality paintbrush, a surface on which to paint (you can choose between a canvas and a thick sheet of paper) and a palette or an old plate on which to mix your colors.

    • 3). Create a rough sketch of your painting with a pencil. This will give you an idea of your lines on paper. This will also help you to adjust the size and proportions of the figures or objects within the painting.

    • 4). Begin painting. Do not be afraid of mixing your paints to create new colors, and repainting parts of your piece that do not turn out as you intended. Your first painting will most likely be more rough than you might like, but don't be discouraged; it is the first step in a process and you will undoubtedly improve.
