How to Replace a Broken Anderson Window
- 1). Take digital photos of the interior and exterior of the window. This will make it easier to reinstall matching trim after your window is replaced.
- 2). Download and print the Anderson Windows measurement worksheet to help you easily keep track of important measurements.
- 3). If you know the exact size of the existing window, you can easily purchase or order an accurate replacement window. If you are not sure, you will need to measure the window. Score the interior wall around the window with a utility knife to preserve plaster or Sheetrock. Remove exterior and interior window trim using a pry bar. Measure width and height between rough openings. Write measurements on the worksheet.
- 4). Cut around the entire perimeter of the window with a reciprocating saw to sever old nails holding the window in place.
- 5). You will need a helper at this point. One person should be outside, and one person should be in the house. Both people should work together to tip the window out, top first. Remove the window from the outside.
- 6). Clean the window opening thoroughly of dirt and debris. Inspect the opening and replace any rotted wood. Nail 2x4 studs onto each side of rough opening if necessary to accommodate the new window. Check that the opening is square by measuring diagonally opposite ways. Measurements should be equal to within 1/8-inch of each other.
- 7). Apply a line of silicone caulk to the inside of the window frame.
- 8). Fit the window into the opening from the outside, bottom first. Rest the bottom edge of the window on the bottom of the opening and tip it in until it fills the opening tightly.
- 9). Check the window with a level. Measure opposite diagonals to check for square. Make any adjustments necessary to achieve level and square. Make sure the window is flush with the opening.
