How to Build a Solar Air Collector
- 1). Prepare window frame. Drill two holes in the bottom of the frame and cover with small mesh screens. These holes will serve as the air intake valves. Drill a hole at the top of the frame, which will serve as the air outtake valve.
- 2). Prepare aluminum cans by spray-painting them black and drilling holes in the bottom of each can. You will link the cans within the frame with duct tape to create what looks like tubed rows from the bottom of the frame to the top. Leave about one can's length at the top and bottom to allow for air intake and outtake.
- 3). Place the cans in the frame and use plywood to seal the back. Install the dryer vent into a south-facing wall. Lean the frame against the south-facing wall outside your home. Make sure the intake holes at the bottom are exposed. Insert the smaller tube at the top outtake hole and link it into a dryer vent placed within the wall.
Cool air enters the frame at the bottom. It is heated within the black metal cans, and because of convection, it rises. It is expelled from the cans via the tube/dryer vent and into your room. Convection currents ensure the continual circulation of air through the frame as long as the sun is shining.
