    Choosing Doors

    • Measure the width of your door opening. Choose doors that are 1/8 inch smaller than the opening in both length and width. This will provide clearance for installation and operation. If your opening is 36 inches wide or smaller, a single bifold door will be sufficient. If it is larger than 36 inches, you'll need to buy two bifold doors. Joining multiple units together is simple and does not change the installation process.

If you plan to paint your bifolds, complete this task before you begin installation. It is much more difficult to paint a bifold door once it has been hung in the opening.

    Installing the Tracks

    • Measure the head of the opening to determine how thick the wall is. Use a pencil to draw a line along the center of the header from end to end. This line will run from one side of the closet opening to the other. Center the bifold track along this line. If you are using multiple doors, join the tracks together with a bifold connector plate as you install the track. Cut the tracks as needed using a hacksaw. The track should extend across the entire width of the opening, minus 1/8 inch on either end for clearance. Slide the pivot brackets into either end of the track. Screw them in place with the screws provided.

Insert the top pivot into the hole at the top of your door. This pivot goes at the hole along the outer edge of the door, where the hinges would be installed on a swinging door. Tap it in place with a hammer to secure it. Repeat this process to install the bottom pivot at the hole in the bottom of the door.

Place the guide pivot into the other hole at the top of your door and tap it in place with a hammer. This guide pivot goes along the edge of the door that would normally hold a lock. If you have a pair of doors, the guide pivots go at the edges of the doors where the two units meet. The majority of bifolds will have all these holes pre-drilled. If yours doesn't, the door will come with a template to help you drill these holes.

    Hanging the Door

    • Hold a plumb bob along the center of the track at one end of the opening. Use the plumb bob to help you install the jamb brackets (L-brackets) at the base of the opening. The jamb brackets should be centered along the track and are screwed to both the floor and the jamb. The jamb brackets has two "legs." The slotted leg should be installed along the floor and the solid leg is fastened to the wall.

To install the doors, align the top pivots with the pivot brackets at either end of the top track. After these pivots are aligned, have a partner help place the guide pivots into the track as well. When the entire top of the door is correctly aligned, you will be able to lift the door slightly and fit the bottom pivot into the jamb brackets at the bottom.

If your doors are crooked or are not functioning properly, you may need to lift the door and move it slightly so that the bottom pivot is further along the slot in the jamb bracket. Add knobs or handles to the front of the door and trim around the opening as desired to hide the top track.
