Chesapeake Energy, headquartered in Oklahoma City, is the largest independent producer of natural gas in the United States and also the most active driller of new wells in the country. Chesapeake Energy concentrates on developing onshore natural gas reserves in the US, primarily in the Barnett Shale of north-central Texas, the Haynesville Shale of East Texas and northwestern Louisiana, the Fayetteville Shale of central Arkansas and the Marcellus Shale of the northern Appalachian Basin – the “Big 4” natural gas shale plays. The other plays Chesapeake is involved in are the Mid-Continent, Appalachian Basin, Permian Basin, Delaware Basin, South Texas, Texas Gulf Coast and Ark-La-Tex regions in the U.S.

Founded by CEO and Chairman Aubrey McClendon and former COO and President Tom L. Ward in 1989, Chesapeake Energy has 4,600 employees. Completing its initial public offering in the early part of 1993, Chesapeake Energy now trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the CHK symbol. At the end of 2Q 2007, Chesapeake had approximately 10.0 trillion cubic equivalent of proved natural gas reserves.

Chesapeake Energy has also made it to the list FORTUNE Magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work For for two consecutive years – 2008 and 2009.
