Converting .doc and .docx Files

• 1). Convert your .docx files to .doc files if you use Word 2007 or higher and want send the file to someone with a version of Word that is older than 2007. You can do this by opening the file you wish to convert in your Word program.
  
  
• 2). Select "Save As" once you've opened the file, and, in the "Save As" box, select "Word 97-2003 Document" in the "Save As Type" drop box. This will convert your .docx file to a .doc file.
  
  
• 3). Open .docx files in Word versions that are older than 2007 by installing the Microsoft Compatibility Pack onto your computer. This will allow you to open .docx files without upgrading to a newer version of Word. See References for a download link.
  
  
• 4). Update any High Priority Microsoft Updates before you download the pack, if you have Microsoft 2003. Begin downloading by hitting the "Download" button on the site and hitting the "Save" button when prompted. Select where on your computer you want the program to be saved (e.g. C:\Windows).
  
  
• 5). Double-click on the FileFormatConverters.exe program file after you select the directory that you'll save the pack under to being the download. Follow the instructions as prompted, and after the installation is done, you can open any .docx without doing anything else.
