How to Paint a Fireplace Wall

    • 1). Remove as much old paint as possible, using fine-grit sandpaper, a scraper or a wire brush. An electric sander may come in handy here if you have a large fireplace wall. If your fireplace is brick, you can lightly sand the surface to prepare it for primer.

    • 2). Vacuum the surround and hearth. You don't want any dust or grit ruining your paint job, so take the time you vacuum well. The vacuum brush attachment works well for this.

    • 3). Apply primer if necessary, using a paintbrush. If you have a brick fireplace, apply an even coat of masonry primer. If your fireplace has been painted before, skip this step.

    • 4). Paint a thin base coat onto the fireplace wall, using a paintbrush or roller, depending on the surface area you're covering. Allow to dry completely.

    • 5). Apply a second coat of paint. Two thin coats generally bond better and last longer than one thick coat. Allow the paint to fully cure before you hang artwork or other decorations. It may take up to a week to cure; check the manufacturer's instructions.
