BFD Instructions
- 1). Check BFD's system requirements to ensure that it will work with your computer system and audio applications. Most present-day systems should have the necessary processing power. Also make sure that the audio application you intend to use is VST-, AU- and/or RTAS-compatible. These are the plug-in formats that BFD uses to interface with various applications.
- 2). Install BFD according to the instructions provided in the manual for your platform. BFD is available for both Mac OS X and Windows. They each have their own installation process. Follow it exactly, and register your copy of BFD with FXspansion when finished.
- 3). Open your digital audio workstation (DAW) or other audio application. Register the BFD plug-in using your application's method for doing so. Some, such as Apple's Logic Pro and Express, do this automatically. Other common applications, such as Ableton Live, require manual plug-in registration.
- 4). Create a virtual instrument (MIDI) track in your audio application and insert an instance of BFD on that track's input slot. Once it has loaded, BFD's interface screen will appear. Click the "Load" button on BFD's interface. It is found directly beneath the drum set graphic in the middle. Choose a drum set from the list. BFD will load the chosen drum set.
- 5). Play your MIDI keyboard. As long as the track is selected, you will hear BFD play back when you play your MIDI keyboard. Note that BFD mapping mirrors standard GM mapping. The kick will be at C1, the "clean" snare sound at D1 and so on. This mapping can be changed within the BFD editor by clicking the "Kit Piece Selector" button on the left of the interface.
- 6). Experiment with different built-in effects and microphone position choices. BFD does not have an integrated sequencer. Use your MIDI keyboard to record directly onto the track. The different microphone position presets are accessed via the mixer section in the lower right corner of the interface. Different microphone positions will affect the sound of the drums and the relationships between the various kit pieces in various ways.
