Jeep Wrangler Transmission Mount Problems
- Transmission mounts are found in all motor vehicles. Mounts are rubber bracing pieces that sit between the transmission and the auto chassis, holding the transmission in place.
- Over time the transmission mounts can become brittle and crack as rubber will do when exposed to weather, heat and water. Shocks that occur as a result of rough shifting, off-road bouncing and bottoming out can also cause the transmission mounts to crack or break. Given enough time and enough driving, the mounts will surely go sooner or later. The harder you drive the sooner they go.
- A tell-tale sign of a broken transmission mount are clunks when shifting from one gear to another with a standard transmission, or from park to drive/reverse with an automatic. Check the mounts from time to time if you take your Jeep off-road to make sure all is well. To do so, remove the skid plate, which covers the gear-box and take a look underneath. Heavy-duty mounts are available.
