Metacam Side Effects
- Metacam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is effective in reducing inflammation, pain and fever. This medication is most widely used in the treatments of osteoarthritis and postoperative pain.
- Side effects that may be experienced while taking Metacam include but are not limited to stomach or intestinal ulcers, dark or tarry stool, intestinal bleeding, vomiting and loss of appetite.
- Use of this medication should be avoided in animals that have a history of inflammation, bleeding or perforations in the stomach or intestine.
- When used with corticosteroids like cortisone and prednisone, aspirin or phenylbutazone, the risks of ulcers increases. Risks of side effects increase when used in combination with other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
- Meloxicam is available in tablet, injectable and liquid form. In the United States, Meloxican is available as Metacam in 0.5 mg/mL or 1.5 mg/mL liquid suspension for oral administration. Metacam tablets are available for humans in 7.5 mg to 15 mg strengths.
