How to Repair a Loose Handrail
- 1). Shake the individual newels (handrail posts) of your handrail to locate the problem.
- 2). Remove the flooring or work through the ceiling to get to the newel's anchoring point (if you cannot already see it).
- 3). Make sure the newels are vertical. Insert a lag bolt (16-inches long by 1/2 inch in diameter) a minimum of 8 inches into each newel from below. Insert the bolt through the solid blocking attached to the floor joists and directly into the center of the newel's dowel pin.
- 4). Test the rigidity of the newel by shaking it.
