    • 1). Purchase a package of pH test strips that are geared toward the substance you are testing. For example, if you are testing pool water, use pool pH strips. If you are testing human liquids, use test strips meant for medical use.

    • 2). Gather a cup of the liquid you want to test and place it into a dry, sterile container.

    • 3). Insert one end of the pH test strip into the liquid and keep it there for two seconds.

    • 4). Pull the test strip out of the water carefully and lay it down on a hard surface to allow it to change color. Let it sit for several minutes.

    • 5). Examine the color of the test strip and hold it against the pH label to find the pH level.

    • 6). Compare the pH level. Zero is the most acidic number, and 14 is the most alkaline. Water is neutral with a pH of 7.
