    • 1). Move the gear shift to "Neutral" and remove the spark plug wires from the plugs.

    • 2). Bend the tabs on the propeller nut retainer away from the propeller nut, using a pair of pliers. Set a piece of scrap wood one or two inches thick between the blades of the propeller and the anticavitation plate directly above the propeller so that the blades jam against the wood and the wood jams against the plate.

    • 3). Slide the propeller nut retainer off the propeller shaft and use an open-end wrench to remove the nut from the shaft. Pull the propeller from the shaft.

    • 4). Remove foreign objects like fishing line and small marine life from the propeller shaft. Apply a heavy coat of white marine grease to the shaft, even if you are not replacing the propeller immediately.
