How to Get Rid of Black Mold in an Old House
- 1). Dry out the area. Stop the water from entering your home, or stop any leaks that are causing the wet conditions. Use a shop vac or sump pump to remove any standing water from your home. Open all the windows to promote air circulation and reduce humidity in the house if the humidity outside is lower than the humidity inside.
- 2). Remove and discard any wet porous materials from your home. This includes carpet, insulation, wall boards, ceiling tile or any other materials that have absorbed water. In some cases, this means removing materials near the floor level, while upper-level materials may still be in good condition.
- 3). Wash nonporous materials such as concrete, metal or solid wood with a 10-percent bleach solution. Mix 1-1/4 cups of bleach with 1 gallon of water. Scrub solid surfaces with a stiff brush. Remove any water used in the washing process with a shop vac.
