    • 1). Download and run the free Windows 7 upgrade advisor (see Resources) to ensure your system is compatible with the new operating system. Click "Download" and save the installation file to your computer. If you agree to the installation terms, click" Agree" then Install, then click "Close." The utility should run and give you information on compatibility. If your computer is able to utilize Windows 7, proceed.

    • 2). Make note of the programs you are using on the Windows XP operating system that you will want to transfer once the upgrade is complete. Gather these disks as well as any device drivers such as your printer installation disk.

    • 3). Transfer any important files you wish to save to an external storage device such as a flash drive or external hard disk. If you have a large number of files, a larger storage system is necessary.

    • 4). Update your antivirus program. Run it to scan your computer, then shut it down to prepare for the installation of Windows 7.

    • 5). Insert the installation disk from your package, or if you've downloaded the installation program, double click the icon. On the "Install Windows" page, click "Install Now." Follow the prompts to accept the licensing agreement and type of installation.

    • 6). Select "Custom" for the installation method, and find the partition your Windows XP program is contained on. Usually it is the "C:" drive. Do not select your external memory source containing your back up files for this step. In Windows.old dialog box, click "OK." Complete the installation.

    • 7). Reinstall your programs and device drivers. This is a good time to update any drivers that may have newer versions. You may be prompted to do this when installing them.

    • 8). Access the external memory source you stored files on and transfer them back to the new operating system.
