    Building a Train Whistle

    • 1). Cut a piece of pine that measures 3/4 inch by 3/4 inch by 4 1/4 inch, and sand it so it has a soft finish.

    • 2). Drill a 7-by-16-inch hole down the center from one end. Make sure that the hole is 3 5/8 inches deep.

    • 3). Cut a 30-degree notch on each side of the pine using a band saw. The notch should be about 3/8 of an inch from the drilled end.

    • 4). Cut the dowel rod so that it is 1 1/4-inch long and file one side. Make sure to file the rod flat so the dowel looks like a half circle.

    • 5). Place the flattened dowel rod down the center of the pine, and blow into the whistle.

    • 6). Remove the dowel rod, and brush glue onto it. Place it back into the pine and allow it to dry.
