How to Repair a Flaking Concrete Patio
- 1). Remove all loose flakes of concrete with a putty knife or flat-head screwdriver. Sweep the area well.
- 2). Pressure-wash the area to remove all loose flakes that were not visually obvious. Allow the surface to dry to the point where there is no more standing water; it's OK if the surface is damp.
- 3). Mix the concrete patching compound mix according to the manufacturer's directions. Patch holes with the mix, using a large putty knife or small trowel to fill the holes to surface level. Use the trowel to scrape off excess patching compound.
- 4). Allow the concrete patching material to dry overnight.
- 5). Mix the concrete overlay mixture according to the manufacturer's directions. Working on a small area at a time, approximately 3 to 4 square feet, use the paint roller to apply a "skim coat" to the entire patio or walkway. A skim coat is a thin coat of concrete applied to even out the surface, disguise the patches and give a uniform look to the area.
- 6). Allow the skim coat to dry and cure for 24 to 48 hours before allowing foot traffic. Let it cure up to 72 hours before moving heavy furniture or other items onto the surface.
